The consignment site said no. Your clothes can still do some good.

A rejection from a luxury resale site usually means the piece won't sell for enough, not that it isn't good. A nonprofit that lends clothing out doesn't need resale value. It needs pieces people would be glad to wear.

Why good pieces get turned down

Luxury consignors are marketplaces. They take what they expect to sell and pay out on: brands on their accepted designer list, in clean and wearable condition, at prices worth listing. Lower-value items earn lower commission, so a lot of perfectly good clothing isn't worth their while.

That leaves a big middle band in limbo. A contemporary label that isn't on the list. A $300 dress that would net you $40. A beautiful coat from a brand nobody searches for. Too good for a donation bin, not worth a marketplace's time.

Your options, honestly

  • Another consignor. Each has its own list. A handbag specialist may want a bag a general site passed on.
  • A local consignment shop. Shops price for their own neighborhood, so a label that means nothing online can sell fine locally.
  • Sell it yourself. The most money, and the most time spent on photos, listings, and the post office.
  • A thrift store. Right for jeans, basics, and kids' clothes. Wrong for a silk gown or a wool suit.
  • OnlyFuego. We lend clothing out instead of reselling it, so resale value doesn't matter to us. We run this one, so weigh it knowing that.

What happens to a donated piece

Each piece is cleaned, photographed, and lent out through our rental program, FashionablyGood, for weddings, galas, and other events. Some go free to job seekers heading into interviews and to community honorees on the night they're recognized. Then they come back and go out again.

Net rental profits are split across the charities on our Honor Roll at year end. Donors nominate the charities, and every nomination goes on the list.

What we're looking for

  • Dresses: cocktail, evening, formal, and good contemporary labels
  • Suits, blazers, and sport coats
  • Coats, including wool, cashmere, and fur
  • Handbags, shoes, and jewelry that finish an outfit

Everyday clothing is better off at a local thrift shop. We'll tell you so.

Common questions

What if it was rejected for condition?

Depends on the flaw. A loose hem or a missing button, we can handle. Stains, holes, odors, or heavy wear, no. Email a photo and we'll tell you honestly.

Is it tax deductible?

Yes, when you donate to a 501(c)(3) and itemize. You deduct the fair market value in current condition. We do not assign values; no legitimate charity does. You get an itemized receipt naming each piece and set the value yourself, with help from our 2026 value guide.

Do you pick up?

No. We mail a free prepaid bag to any state.
